John Slavin Art

Portfolio: 9. Canigou and Bugarach

Mountains and rivers are my favourites. From a mountain one can make art directly. The subject size gives a freedom impossible to find in agriculture. To paint a river one must step outside of the flow of time and water. To view indefinite pattern, to capture in statements fleeting phenomena.  Stone and wave contain all that I am capable of as an artist. I cannot paint using concept or doctrine. I paint from an inner need to paint, an emptiness like a blank canvas, and I paint what I see as beauty in nature, not the works of man.  In the myriad of natural form I must select subject matter with a poet’s eye. In proposing an exhibition the same faculty comes into play. I seek the truth of beauty in nature using art, that cosmic personal relevance to the individual, that mystic context of life.
