Belisarius Begging for Alms
Homage to Jacques Louis David, his painting Belisarius Begging for Alms, 1781. My work is a portrait of humanity during the coronavirus 2019 when beggars disappeared from Edinburgh streets. In this contemporary setting, the blind beggar is a player in Japanese Noh Theatre coming across a footbridge over the Edinburgh railway to Portobello. The soul of the painter is in solution and painting is a seance, where the spirit is alive and the dead can be seen in an 'otherworld'.
